The Gray Hawk  breeds in southeastern Arizona where it is restricted to tall cottonwood forests along a few streams. It may also occur in extreme southeastern New Mexico and southwestern Texas. It rarely occurs year-round in the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. It is a regular resident in coastal areas of Mexico and in the Yucatan Peninsula.
