The Polar Vortex, Bomb Cyclone and Frick’in Cold Weather has now been going on for over two weeks. Thirteen below nights, eighteen below nights, fifteen below nights, 65 mph wind gusts, and twelve inch snow storms have led to frozen pipes, cancelled school, impassable roads and pretty damn lousy birding.
Ingrid and I have twice cancelled birding excursions in Massachusetts. Even when we have gotten out for a little birding . . . it’s been difficult to stay out of the car for more than a few minutes.
Still the cold has attracted tons of birds to our feeding stations and to the river in front of the house. Add in a handful of birds seen from the car . . . and it hasn’t been a bad first week of the year . . . considering.
